DRYWOOD TERMITES
As their name implies, Drywood Termites feed on dry wood, typically above the soil. Colonies are constructed inside the wood and can be hard to detect. One common way to identify termite damage is by the fecal pellets they leave behind. Commonly kicked out by workers these pellets are about the size of a grain of sand.
SUBTERRANEAN TERMITES
Incredibly destructive, Subterranean Termites cause more than $2 billion in damages each year. These moisture dependent termites maintain contact with soil and typically build colonies in structures with defective plumbing, or areas with improper drainage. They are often build mud tubes as a means for travel and protection.
FORMOSAN TERMITES
Formosan Termites are considered to be the most destructive. These termites also build mud tubes, but successful above ground colonies, consisting of millions of individuals that collectively eat up to 13 ounces of wood per day, do not need soil to survive. This can make locating and controlling them more difficult.
